My Story – How I Travel

Has life has passed you by? It’s never too late to start, believe me, I know.

“Inside every old person is a young person wondering what happened.” Terry Pratchett

Welcome to my page. My name is Cherie, being an introvert, I had mixed feelings about starting this website. Who would be interested in what I have to say? Who would care about my journey?  However, I figured, I have nothing to lose apart from the chance of being embarrassed and it might just help you to take the plunge and follow your dreams and passions too.  I was born and still live in Australia, I’m 62, divorced, mother of 3 and a grandmother of 3 and in the last few years I’ve started to turn my life around in lots of ways and there is still a way to go. Join me on this journey, what do you have to lose apart from a few minutes of your time? Just maybe you will enjoy my ramblings and find some helpful tips and inspiration to follow your dreams and become part of a great community. In these challenging times, travel is not an option, but once the world opens up again, I want to be on a plane heading off on my next trip. Are you coming with me?

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.”― Jack Kerouac

Where it all started and how I found ‘a better way'.                                                                                                                                          I had my first child at 17 and by the time I was 29, I had 3 kids and was on my 2nd marriage. I’ve always been looking after someone else. I was still looking after my Mum who had dementia, I was unhappy, stressed, I hated my job, my kids had left home but with 2 mortgages and a beautiful home that took a lot of work to maintain, I just couldn't see a way out. I was sick of trading money for time and I knew I wanted more. The idea of giving up a good income and security was scary but I knew things had to change. I was running out of time. I’d travelled a bit, been around Australia, an overseas cruise, 7 trips to Thailand with friends. I dreamt of going to the UK and Europe but I didn't know where to start, how I could afford it and who to go with?                                                                                     The Universe works in amazing ways and my youngest daughter, Mallory, earned a scholarship to attend Leeds University for 12 months and I figured if Mal could go on her own, so could I. So I planned an 8 week holiday and headed off to join Mallory in the UK. We had the most amazing trip, and that was it, I had had the travel bug and had fallen in love with Scotland. I knew something had to change, I needed to find a better way.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. --Mark Twain

Unfortunately, my Mum had a fall and due to her declining health, so I could no longer care for her and she was moved to a nursing home. I have always been the “go-to” person in our family, and don't get me wrong, I don't mind that, but once all that responsibility was gone, I didn't know who I was. Every decision up to that point involved considering someone else and all of a sudden, it was just me! I started thinking about what I should do and I realised I didn't have a clue!                                                                                          Who am I?                                                                                                                                                                                                            What do I want?                                                                                                                                                                                                  What do I NOT want?                                                                                                                                                                                           What am I passionate about?

“Live life with no excuses, travel with no regret” -Oscar Wilde

Don't get me wrong, I have lots of interests, but don't I excel at anything, I have no outstanding talent or calling. I went through all my loves and hates and the only thing that really excites me is travel, to Scotland in particular and I love everything to do with Outlander and behind the scenes of my favourite TV shows and movies. I love visiting film sites and meeting the actors from my favourite shows. I love learning about new cultures and seeing live music and stand up comedy. When I think of those things my heart beats faster and I feel a surge of energy. When I talk to anyone about my tours, I hear the excitement in my voice, so much so, that I have to make a conscious effort to slow my speech down. So I figured that’s my passion and that’s where I start.

A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. --Lao Tzu

So here I am 5 years later, I quit my job, sold my house, I’ve been to Scotland 4 more times, to India, Singapore and back to Ireland and Italy and if not for Covid, I would have been back to Scotland and to the States last year. I organise Outlander tours to Scotland and support our tour members through the process. We have a private online community for the tours and they chat every day and we’ve made lifelong friendships. I run a Facebook page called Travel to Scotland with almost 13,000 members to support anyone wanting to travel to Scotland.  I have learned so much and I’m still learning. I’ve had 3 failed attempts at business and lost lots of money, but I have stuck to my goals, I’m still standing, and it gets better each year. Now as travel is on hold, I’m starting my next challenge which is an online community and website around travel. I want to encourage others to follow their dreams and if that’s travel, give some helpful hints and tips and support them on their journey. It’s so much easier to do when you know what to look for and the steps to take.

“What good is inspiration if it’s not backed up by action?” – Tony Robbins

I  don't know the first thing about websites or online business, so the first step was to do some research and learn what I needed to do. It will take time, but I can be patient. I really hate how online businesses and websites are so pushy and in your face, but it's a catch 22, I want the information about travel etc but don't want to be bombarded. So my plan is to do the research, provide the information but not spam or bombard anyone as I hate sites that do that. I want to build a community so we can help each other. I don't have thousands to invest so this is perfect and there is no risk, I’ve found an online system that looks great, very down to earth, simple steps. No hype, no big financial outlay and even a tech-challenged baby boomer like me can follow it. I have made a lot of mistakes both with travel and business, so I figure if I can help someone else achieve their travel dream and not make the same mistakes that would be a way to give back. If we can build a community to support each other even better.

"I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work." -Thomas A. Edison

Once covid is sorted then what's going to stop you travelling?                                                                                                                        We can’t currently travel but we can still plan and dream, right?                                                                                                                      Do you have any questions you'd like to ask?                                                                                                                                                 What information would you like to see on the page?                                                                                                                                    What concerns do you have about travel? (besides the virus)                                                                                                                    What’s stopped you from travelling in the past?

Like I said, my intent is to pass on helpful information and provide value and help others travel. I will have links to products I mention or reviews, but they will only be products I own and use myself and that I know work and the link just makes it easier for you to find them. I will do research to find the cheapest most reliable source I can.  I would love to hear from you if there are other products or services you recommend that I can check out and try.

I do hope to eventually become an affiliate and also to sell my own products so I can earn a passive income and travel more, but that will be secondary to giving helpful information and building the community and it's going to take a while. If it works and it’s successful then you can follow my journey and do the same. If you would like to know more, hit the link below. If you would like to see the full version of this blog, with more about the places I’ve been and the mistakes I made along the way keep an eye on this site. Subscribe to get emails with helpful tips, product reviews and tour information as they are added to the page. I promise I won't spam you or bombard you. I’m not that prolific a writer anyway lol.

As this is all a work in progress, there will be lots of changes to the page as I learn more. I’m enjoying the process and exercising my brain and it's keeping me interested. If you would like to learn more about the online business side of things or have any questions, let me know.

This is the link to the Facebook community page Travel to Scotland.  Our community is made up of guides, seasoned travellers, people interested in travelling to Scotland for the first time or as returning travellers, plus lots of photographers, artists and craftspeople. You can ask and answer questions and share information about Scotland. Come join us.
